v. 2016
The GABBIA is an Italian word, that means big cage, in English is Gabion, is a cage, cylinder or box filled with rocks, or concrete, for use in construction. The most common use of gabions is to stabilize shorelines.
The design is inspired by the indistinct winter horizon on the balmy beach. The ambiguity of the horizon forms a unique impression of Toronto's winter waterfront.
The design is trying to explore the possibility of alternative use of galvanized construction wire mesh. The structure of the design intends to correlate the grid system of construction wire mesh with the vague winter water horizon. the rectangular form with an opening towards the lake provides a frame for people to view the winter lake. The winter waterfront partially penetrates through the volume.
